The discovery of new technology is in full force today. I believe that when individuals discover something new with technology, which is happening every day, they become so excited. During the Victorian era, these discoveries were just as exciting. Although they did not have anything compared to today, during that time, those discoveries were huge. I think that at first, the Victorians would have been afraid of the digital age at first, just as anyone new to it would be. With it being so complex, it is a lot to learn, Individuals today are so adapted to it because we have been raised around it. Once they were around it for a little while and learned it, I’m sure they would have found it of great benefit. Any new discoveries at any day in age are going to be exciting for people.

Dorian Gray
I believe a way that many people avoid things such as age nowadays is plastic surgery. It is becoming so common in today’s world that so many people are doing it. I feel that a lot of pressure comes from famous people and the perspective of having the perfect body, skin, hair, makeup etc. is so demanding on today’s society. People are making looks all about everything and a way to avoid aging is by having things such as Botox done. I think that for a time being, plastic surgery can make an individual feel more confident in their looks, but I also believe that they will always want more. Once you start, it is hard to quit and it won’t be enough so you continue to do it more and more which can become an issue in the long run. No matter how much we try to change and avoid, there will always be a constant reminder of who we really are.
If I Were Invisible
It would be an awesome if I had the ability to be invisible. If I could find a way to do this, I think I would use it for both good and evil purposes. A way that I would consider to be good for myself is I could hide from any people or person that I do not want to see. I would also avoid any responsibilities
that I have. Although these may seem as bad ways to use the ability, they would be considered good ways to my benefit. I don’t think I would haunt anyone specifically but I would enjoy messing with my friends and family by holding things and walking around to freak them out, as well as eat things in front of them so they only see the food floating and then disappearing, not having a clue what was going on.
Jekyll & Hyde
The story of Jekyll and Hyde has been so interesting for so long because it is something that everyone experiences within themselves till this day. Whether we want to admit it or not, each of us has a good side and a bad side. Some may let their bad sides out more than others but that does not mean we do not all have one in us. It is a part of life to be able to keep the “bad” inside of us under control. It could be as much as getting upset with another person and getting into an argument where we may say things that we shouldn’t. People such as murderers, robbers, etc. lost control of themselves and were not able to keep their bad side under control, therefor it takes over and becomes the main side of them. It is important that we all know we are capable of evil, even if we do not want to admit it. It is just as important that we keep that evil under control so that it does not take completely control over our bodies, taking over our good side.
Monsters
Michael Myers is my favorite “monster” in any movie. I have always been the most terrified and most interested in him, if that makes sense. He scares the crap out of me, but I can’t help but watch and be obsessed with every Halloween movie. He has the creepiest mask, and he was the creepiest little kid, its all so interesting. The way he walks so slowly, but always catches up to you. Its like he’s always watching and shows up on the creepiest day of the year! What’s not to obsess over. He has always been the one I hate to see during Halloween, in a haunted house is the worst! If I see Michael Myers coming towards me, I am out of there. I prefer to watch him on a screen and then stay up all night in fear that I am going to wake up to him in my house. Or road trips, that is the worst. When you stop at a creepy truck stop or restaurant and all you can think of is him standing outside of the bathroom stall that you are in…. Terrifying!
Great Expectations Ending
Though I liked the way Great Expectations ended in the movie, there were a few things that caught me by surprise. The ending showed how good of a person Joe always was because he took Pip in with no hesitation even after Pip had treated him badly. I was shocked that Joe and Biddy ended up together in the movie, although in the story they would have been closer in age it was weird to see in the movie. Plus, I think Biddy was probably still interested in Pip, but she wasn’t going to wait around forever. I did hold some hope for Pip and Estella, but I think everyone did and that’s why it just couldn’t happen. The story wasn’t supposed to have a happy ending, so it was obvious that they were not going to end up together, no matter what viewers hoped. I would have liked for Estella to find herself and not be so cold so that her and Pip could have been together, but she had been so broken since such a young age it was pretty much impossible. I believe they would have both liked to end up together, but it was much too complicated to make work.
Crime & Punishment
I was surprised that the Victorians were given their own jail cells upon being imprisoned. That is definitely not the case today in jails. The bad thing about them having their own separate cells I guess would be that they were not allowed any human contact and were not allowed to talk. That alone could drive someone crazy. It makes sense why there were suicides occurring, although suicide still occurs in jails today. In todays jails, they are allowed human contact and are actually provided with activities within the jail, but this is not at their leisure. There are certain times in a day when they are allowed to do and participate in certain things. Prisoners are told exactly when to do everything throughout their day, including eating and sleeping. Being in prison I couldn’t expect to have been enjoyable in the Victorian Era just as I wouldn’t expect it to be today.
Great Expectation Characters
The characters in Great Expectations all played their parts so well! I liked Pip throughout the entire movie and although when he became a gentleman and was rude to some people, I knew that wasn’t how he really was, and I still liked him. I would have hoped for a happy ending for Pip and Estella, but it was clear that she could not love him and although sad, it wasn’t her fault, I blame Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham was a terrible person and although she had been wronged, it doesn’t give her an excuse to turn into the monster that she was. I loved Joe in the film! He was a good guy and always stayed very humble. He was there for Pip always, even when Pip acted nasty towards him. Mrs. Joe was crazy and although not in the movie much, I did not like her and the way she treated Pip as a young boy.
Chapter 1 Great Expectations
In chapter one of Great Expectations some childhood experiences that Charles Dickens shared were loneliness, fear, and negativity. I believe Pip was a lonely boy who wanted more in life than what he was given. As for the prisoner, he showed fear to Pip and frightened him into doing whatever the prisoner wanted from him in order to avoid being hurt. I am unsure whether Dickens may have experienced any of the exact events in this part of the novel, but I do think that as a child he experienced a lot of abuse and loneliness that lead him to the first chapter of this novel.
Pip is a young boy that is held responsible for chores, abused by his sister, he shows in the first chapter that his parents are dead but does not seem to know much about them, showing Dickens may not have had much sympathy for the death of his own parents. I believe that many of Dickens life experiences led him to be able to write a novel with strong emotion in it.
Transportation & Communication
The improvements made to the transportation in the Victorian Era made many positive changes for the people. It made resources more readily available to them, such as; milk, meat, news, etc. The transportation systems improved drastically from railways, to underground, to turn pikes, to electric telegraphs. The improvements made to the transportation systems also played a huge role in improvements of the communication. The Victorians were able to send and receive messages much quicker than ever before. Electric telegraphs made it possible for a message to be sent and received by many people at one time. This made the way of living, getting from place to place, sending and receiving information much more efficient.
